Anything that can bring a large family together is surely a good thing. I recently had the opportunity to visit the beautiful state of Colorado for a family reunion. I enjoyed an incredibly fun and memorable weekend with cousins and extended family that I had not seen in almost 20 years. As Latinos, there are two things that not only bring us together but play an essential role in our gatherings… food and music!
Music is a part of our heritage, part of our childhood memories and brings us closer together when we are apart. Food is just as important as we have tried to remain loyal to the food traditions of our parents homeland.
While we definitely shared a few traditional Hispanic meals, there were times when we wanted to enjoy each others company and not have anyone slaving away in a kitchen. We had a great weekend planned out that included a fun day at the lake. A day of swimming, beach volleyball, and sun bathing requires a hearty meal, refreshing fruit and lots of water!
My extremely clever cousin was prepared and ready to serve up the perfect meal for a day at the Lake. We enjoyed small sausages for hoagies that came straight off the grill and into a bun. A mouth-watering meal that hit the spot after a long day out in the sun.
King’s Hawaiian is the perfect bread for jalapeno and cheese filled sausages. Sausages sliced in half and placed into mini King’s Hawaiian buns are the perfect sized sandwich to eat with one hand, leaving the other hand free for a drink or plate. They’re also the perfect size for little hands and tummies.
You can serve hoagies with onions, cheese, mustard and ketchup but the sweetness of the King’s Hawaiian bread and the spice from the jalapeno made the sandwiches complete. There is nothing like good times and great food to bring family together!
