During the week of Halloween, especially the weekend of Halloween, calls to the veterinarians at Pet Poison Helpline increase by 12 percent, making it the call center’s busiest time of year.
We have all heard stories of the dogs eating children’s left out Halloween candy, unfortunately some candy can be poisonous to dogs. Candy wrappers and wreak havoc on their tummies as will overindulgence and raisins.
In large enough amounts, chocolate and cocoa products can kill your dog. Humans easily metabolize the components in chocolate, but dogs process it much more slowly, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system. The darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more poisonous it is. A 50-pound dog can be sickened by ingesting only one ounce of Baker’s chocolate!
Pets look adorable and hilarious dressed up for Halloween, but safety is key, be sure it doesn’t impair their vision or movement. My boys tried dressing up our little girl but she wasn’t having it, I think she knew these boys were trying to dress her up as a Jedi and she wasn’t having it. A princess deserves a princess gown, for sure.
If you do dress up your pet, you will want to enter the Hairy & Scary photo contest hosted by Purina and Albertsons to benefit your local dog shelter! Post pictures of your pet in costume, via Facebook and Twitter, onto a Fan Reel page and one winner from our Albertsons division will be selected to receive a $250 donation along with ten (10) bags of Purina ONE® (16.5lb.) and ten (10) bags of Purina® Cat Chow® (16 lb.), in their name, to their local, non-profit, accredited animal shelter or rescue to assist with housing, feeding, caring for, and finding families for, thousands of dogs, cats and other lovable creatures. I think we can all agree that our Baton Rouge and Ascension animal shelters could surely use this gift! Contest ends October 31st!
