Game Day Fan Favorite Recipes with Old El Paso™

Game Day! Nothing brings more excitement to our neighborhood than game-day. We are known in Louisiana for our elaborate tailgating / football parties and of course FOOD! Food is shared among family and friends throughout the day and cooking is done the day before or first thing in the morning. Baton Rouge offers a unique game-day atmosphere with it’s strong traditions and community spirit. I’ve partnered with Old El Paso™ to bring you some tasty fan-favorite Game-Day dishes. Being that the football season starts in the fall and ends in winter, we usually enjoy warm dips and warm finger foods.

  • Seasoned Beef Mixture
  • One Packet of Old El Paso Taco seasoning mix, I get this in the burrito kit and use the beans and rice as filling of desired.
  • 1 lb meat
  • 1/2 onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 small can chopped green chilis
  • Crunch Wrap Ingredients
  • 6 large tortillas
  • 6 corn tostada shells or broken taco shells
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
  • Rice & whole beans or re-fried beans

  1. Beef directions: make as directed on Taco seasoning package package.
  2. Stir in sauteed onion and green chilis for 5 minutes. Simmer on medium-low heat for 20 minutes, until most of the moisture has cooked away. Remove from heat before the meat is completely dry.
  3. Lay out soft flower tortilla. Build crunchwrap by adding beef and spreading it out evenly in the center of the tortilla, add the corn shell(s), add sour cream, lettuce, cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, beans and rice and sauce (if desired). Fold tortilla fold the edges of the flour tortilla up over the center mixture. Continue to fold until it is completely wrapped and in the shape of a hexagon, it doesnt have to be perfect because it will be cut into four. Brown for about 60 seconds on each side or until the tortilla begins to brown. Cut into four and serve with hot sauce or salsa.

Now our our favorite (so easy it’s ridiculous) finger food, Natchitoches Meat Pies!

Like a Latin American empanada, these baked hand pies from Louisiana are filled with savory ground meat and spices. Traditionally, one would use equal parts ground beef and pork for the filling, along with the classic Creole Trinity, a combination of onions, bell peppers, celery, and garlic. This year I will be making our meat pies with a spicy twist. This are simple, quick and easy to make!I buy prepared dough sheets and cut out the shape of footballs.

Pre-heat the oven to 350°F and spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.  Lightly brush the outer edges of each football oval with beaten egg. Place 2 1/2 tablespoons of filling in the center of each round. Place a second piece of football shaped dough over the filling to make small football. Using the back of a fork, press around the round side of the circle to seal the pie. Transfer the pies to the prepared baking sheet. Repeat the process with the remaining dough sections. Bake in a  350° oven.

Lastly, Mexican Buffalo Chicken Dip, a Game Day gathering is not complete without Buffalo Chicken Dip! This dip is another spicy twist on a Game Day classic and includes refried beans and taco seasoning along with the basic ingredients. You can find the full recipe at

Now to bring a little bit of summer to your winter gathering, try this simple and refreshing Watermelon Agua Fresca to wash down all this spicy goodness. You will need:

  • 8 cups seedless watermelon cubes
  • 6 tablespoons honey or agave nectar
  • 1/3 cup fresh lime juice plus 1 sliced lime
  • A few sprigs mint or rosemary
  • Ice
Directions: Puree watermelon in blender. Strain into bowl through fine-mesh sieve. Stir in honey and lime juice. Transfer to pitcher; stir in 1-1/2 cups water, lime slices and mint. Chill; serve over ice.
