Creating a Masterpiece Homeschool Art Curriculum

This month I introduced our boys to Creating a Masterpiece for our homeschool art class.  One of the greatest benefits of homeschooling is that our boys have more free time to utilize in pursuing interests such as music and art.  Our oldest son Micah is definitely our creative one; he would like nothing more than to spend his days painting rocks, molding clay, or drawing stories. Needless to say, Micah was the most excited to try out Creating a Masterpiece and boy, were we in for a real treat.

One on One Instruction

The very best part of Creating a Masterpiece would have to be Sharon Hofer. (Ms. Sharon to us) Ms. Sharon is a professional artist and teacher, her passion is to encourage homeschoolers throughout the US and abroad with her collection of DVD art lessons.

If I could choose someone to teach my boys (besides me of course) it would be someone exactly like Ms. Sharon. She is a sweet, soft spoken woman that teaches each lesson with such gentleness, excitement and very in depth verbal instruction.

Ms. Sharon is proficient in a variety of art media and currently teaches the following:

  • Charcoal Drawing
  • Sculpture
  • Pencil Drawing
  • Watercolor Painting
  • Acrylic Painting
  • Pastel Painting
  • Ink

The Art Lesson

The art lesson DVD’s come in 5 different levels and each level is available as a complete set of six DVDs, or you can purchase the DVD lessons individually. The lessons are taught step by step and broken down into sections making it very easy for the student to take breaks or to come back to the piece to finish at a different time or day. Each lesson also comes with a list of required materials. It’s very difficult for Micah to not finish something once he has started it, so he was eager to get through the DVD lessons in one sitting. It took Micah about 45 minutes to an hour to complete his painting. This is a great curriculum not only for homeschoolers but for any student that enjoys art.

We tackled the Level 1 Peaceful Lake Lesson in Pastels. I was a bit skeptical about how the painting would come out as this was our first attempt at working with pastels. We were pleasantly surprised with our results, I made a painting too! We watched in amazement as the painting came together and literally jumped out of the page at us. It felt like Marry Poppins when Bert’s paintings come to life on the wet sidewalk. It was truly amazing to see our paintings come to life for us. Best of all was the sense of accomplishment Micah felt, it was written all over his face.

Micah and I share a new hobby and though we were anxious to try some of Ms. Sharon’s other media and techniques we are going to stick with pastels and master them before moving on to something new. There is something special about using ones hands and  as the instruments instead of brushes. It was easy to use the pastels, no preparation of paints and though our hands were covered in paint, it was a symbol of our work and the fun we had creating our own masterpieces.

Cost of the Art Lessons

Each individual lessons is $35. I don’t think you can find one on one teaching from a professional like Ms. Sharon with endless hours of instruction for this price! You can purchase the complete set of DVD’s for a level at $179. You save over $30 if you purchase the complete set. At $179, this is an amazing price for the knowledge and instruction your family will receive. However, I realize many homeschool families struggle with one income, and might not have the finances outside of the basic core curriculum.  Purchasing this set for a co-op and joining families for these lessons would also be very beneficial and incredibly fun for your homeschoolers.
