Who, What, Where, When and Why of Pinterest

Did you know that Pinterest is now the third most popular social network on the web, behind Facebook and Twitter.

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is a content sharing service that allows members to “pin” images, videos and other objects to their pin-board.

Pinterest users can upload, sort and manage images, known as pins, and other media content through collections known as pinboards. Pin-boards are generally themed so that pins can easily be organized, categorized, discovered and followed by other users.

If you are already on Pinterest please leave your URL or username in the comments below so I can follow you.

A “nopin” HTML meta tag was released by Pinterest on February 20, 2012 to allow websites to opt out of their images being pinned.

Who? Comics for iPad – Walt Disney & Jane Goodall – #CleverWhoComics

Thank you to who?Comics for sponsoring this post and encouraging my child to read biographies in comic book form! Please click here to learn more about the app. And follow who? Comics on Twitter for updates!

Our family was blessed with a new iPad2 for Christmas so we have been learning as much as we can, trying out new apps and striving to solely use the iPad for educational purposes. As a homeschool mom, I love finding fun, creative ways for the boys to learn and the more they read the better!

So when I was presented with the opportunity to test out a new educational “Who? Comics” app for children ages 8 and up, I jumped all over it! Our boys love to read and they especially like reading comics but I have had a hard time finding the appropriate comics for their ages. Who? Comics are  biographies written about some of our most popular leaders and historical figures, they are both educational and entertaining.   Who? Comics did a great job of finding the balance between teaching the facts and keeping children’s attention through fun story telling. The comics are in depth and somewhat long, they read out more like a chapter book with around 150 pages.

My 9 yr old, Micah, choose two comics to read,  Walt Disney and Jane. Both comics were funny, sad, entertaining and fun to read for my son. There were a few times where the translation of the comic was  confusing and Micah  had to ask me for help or he was able to figure out what the sentence should have been and he moved on. I found my 9 year old giggling to himself as he read, he especially liked the Jane Goodall comic. I would suggest reading the comics before hand to make sure they are appropriate for your family. I did catch a couple pages of this comic having to do with chickens and where eggs come from that I made my boys skip because I thought it was completely irrelevant to the story and had foolish words that we do not encourage our boys to use.

The app was originally created in Korea, thus the problems with translation but it was not bothersome enough to turn him off from reading further.  Who? Comics is trying to correct any translation problems so that the comics are accurate and correct for English speakers.

The app is very easy to navigate once it is downloaded, you will have a bookshelf where you keep your purchased comics and you can purchase new comics within the app. There are also badges that children can collect through reading achievements and they can find hidden badges with each comic.

The illustrations are nice, my boys thought they were great.

We really enjoyed being able to reference the timeline when one of the boys had questions or for review.

My boys enjoyed the Who? comics, glad to have found another great resource to keep my boys reading. We are looking forward to reading some of the other biographies in the collection.

You can view a short video to learn more about Who? Comics here.

Thank you again to who? Comics for sponsoring my post. Please click here to learn more about the app. Visit who? Comics for updates.  I was selected for this opportunity by the Clever Girls Collective. All opinions expressed here are my own. #CleverWhoComics #spon

SOPA & PIPA Say What?

SOPA & PIPA may sound like cute cartoon characters, but no, no warm-n-fuzzy going on here.

SOPA is an acronym for Stop Online Piracy Act and PIPA is an acronym for Protect IP Act.  So why are online users, business owners, bloggers and  social media enthusiasts in an uproar? Here’s why…

SOPA and PIPA are two bills backed by movie studios & Time Warner, that have been introduced to Congress. These bills would basically censor the web and impose regulations on American businesses.

As written, authorities and rights holders would be able to get court orders to force broadband providers, hosting companies, payment services and search engines to cut off websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Currently rogue websites based overseas can offer pirated material such as unlicensed film streams out of reach of American law.

The problem is that these bills are flawed, there are simple ways to get around them. These bills will allow US businesses to be shot down with the “YAY” of one judge… frightening!

Can you imagine YouTube going black, frozen, dead?

“Cherish” – NEW Photo App for iPhone #moms #iphoneography

Like most moms, I snap (or click) everything and love recording every moment and detail of our lives. I most like taking pictures of my boys and my iPhone is my camera of choice. I also enjoy using the latest photo apps to brighten, liven up or just play with my photos, I have my favorites and I use them daily.

I was recently introduced to a very neat, newly-launched app for iPhone called “Cherish“. This app is also compatible with iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G.

You can take photos from the Cherish app or add a photo from your album, choose from a number of filters to enhance, brighten and change the colors in your photo.

The best feature of this app is how it organizes your photos. As a mom of 4 boys my photos can get lost in my albums and I am left scrambling to find a specific picture. Cherish organizes your photos by child and lists photos in chronological order by each child’s age! Are you jumping up and down with me yet??? You can easily browse through the Cherish Album and see your child’s photographs, sorted by how old the child was when the photograph was taken! Create multiple albums …. one for each child, one for family and don’t forget the furry four-legged children in the family! When taking your photo, you simply click on the baby face icon to choose the child / album to tag your photo.

When taking your photos with the app you will find two adorable icons to help you get your little ones attention…  a rattle makes a rattle sound and a little duck squeaks! Once you have taken your photo, you can add a note about the photo and upload to Facebook with one click! Your note will be the description of your photo on Facebook. You can also Share email photos or export them to your iPhone photo album.

I love this app, I think many moms will soon find that this is a must have app. The name of the app fits it perfectly…. what better way to save cherished memories of your most cherished babies!  Cherish just launched, be sure to grab your app in the Apple app store here, it’s just $1!

Let me now what you think about this new app in the comments below ….

iPhone 4S Camera

Moms, if you are on the fence about whether to upgrade to the new #iPhone 4S and you like to take lots of pics…JUST DO IT! The camera alone will make it worth every penny!

If you are anything like me, you love taking pictures of the kiddos in action. Whipping out your clunky camera (and lens) is not always convenient. The iPhone 4s gives you sharper details and brighter colors than the iPhone 3 & 4.

The iPhone 4S camera gives you 8 megapixels — that’s 60 percent more pixels than the iPhone 4 camera. I can clearly see the difference in the resolution and details of my pictures. The iPhone 4S not only takes great shots during the day but by night or low light as well. This camera has a powerful new LED  flash to brighten dim lights and can be set to auto, off or on.

Another great feature is face detection, this camera is smart enough to know whether you’re taking a portrait or a group shot. It focuses on the most prominent face in the frame (even dogs) and balances exposure across up to 10 faces.  The iPhone 4S has an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus, flash, f/2.4 aperture lens, and a backside-illuminated CMOS sensor.  Apple also claims the new camera performs 33 percent faster than the iPhone 4′s camera …. I believe them!

It takes great action shots in seconds….which is a necessity with 4 boys. Focus with a tap. Then press the volume-up button to take a photo. A very neat feature that has saved me time and procrastination is editing my  photos right on my iPhone.  As if the camera was not good enough, it’s an on-the-fly photo editor. You can crop, rotate, enhance, and remove red-eye right on the iPhone, making it easier to share on the spot.

iPhone 4S videos also get a boost with the ability to shoot 1080p HD video clips at 30 frames per second and with video stabilization.
