Quick & Easy Tuscan Style Beef & Vegetables Soup by Bertolli

As a mother who works from home and homeschools 4 boys, I try to make dinner meals as quick and easy as possible, without sacrificing nutrition and taste. I am not one to make frozen meals as hubby is not very fond of them but when the opportunity arose to take the Bertolli Weeknight Meal Special Challenge…. I said YES! Why not? I will try anything that offers to make dinner meals and planning a tad easier.

I took a trip to my local grocer and found four different flavors of frozen soups… Chicken Minestrone , Roasted Chicken & Rotini Pasta , Tomato Florentine & Tortellini with Chicken, and Tuscan-Style Beef & Vegetables. I decided to go with the Tuscan Style Beef & Vegetables, tender beef, mushrooms, yellow squash, zucchini, carrots and celery with bow-tie pasta in a savory broth.

I made bread rolls to go with the soup and our meal was complete; the entire meal took less than 30 minutes to make and serve. I’m happy to report that our entire family really enjoyed the meal. The soup cooked down easily and smoothly, the vegetables stayed crisp and fresh, not soggy or falling apart as with some frozen meals. I did add some Tony Chachere’s Original Creole seasoning, we are in Louisiana and we like our foods with a BAM of spice!

Who? Comics for iPad – Walt Disney & Jane Goodall – #CleverWhoComics

Our family was blessed with a new iPad2 for Christmas so we have been learning as much as we can, trying out new apps and striving to solely use the iPad for educational purposes. As a homeschool mom, I love finding fun, creative ways for the boys to learn and the more they read the better!

So when I was presented with the opportunity to test out a new educational “Who? Comics” app for children ages 8 and up, I jumped all over it! Our boys love to read and they especially like reading comics but I have had a hard time finding the appropriate comics for their ages. Who? Comics are  biographies written about some of our most popular leaders and historical figures, they are both educational and entertaining.   Who? Comics did a great job of finding the balance between teaching the facts and keeping children’s attention through fun story telling. The comics are in depth and somewhat long, they read out more like a chapter book with around 150 pages.

My 9 yr old, Micah, choose two comics to read,  Walt Disney and Jane. Both comics were funny, sad, entertaining and fun to read for my son. There were a few times where the translation of the comic was  confusing and Micah  had to ask me for help or he was able to figure out what the sentence should have been and he moved on. I found my 9 year old giggling to himself as he read, he especially liked the Jane Goodall comic. I would suggest reading the comics before hand to make sure they are appropriate for your family. I did catch a couple pages of this comic having to do with chickens and where eggs come from that I made my boys skip because I thought it was completely irrelevant to the story and had foolish words that we do not encourage our boys to use.

The app was originally created in Korea, thus the problems with translation but it was not bothersome enough to turn him off from reading further.  Who? Comics is trying to correct any translation problems so that the comics are accurate and correct for English speakers.

The app is very easy to navigate once it is downloaded, you will have a bookshelf where you keep your purchased comics and you can purchase new comics within the app. There are also badges that children can collect through reading achievements and they can find hidden badges with each comic.

The illustrations are nice, my boys thought they were great.

We really enjoyed being able to reference the timeline when one of the boys had questions or for review.

 

My boys enjoyed the Who? comics, glad to have found another great resource to keep my boys reading. We are looking forward to reading some of the other biographies in the collection.

Crest & Oral-B ~ Cars 2 Movie party!

We recently hosted a fun Oral-B Stages III & Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health FOR ME party for BOYS… I have four boys and we invited our friends with 3 boys! We also had two princess  gift bags for the two little girls in our lives that did not make the party. Crest & Oral-B Pro-Health For Me, is the first-ever complete collection of oral care products for kids 8-12, with rinse, brush, floss, and toothpaste made just for them. I was shocked to see that my boys really, truly were brushing and flossing just for fun! No more struggles trying to get the boys to floss, they now have nifty flossers and a yummy tasting mouth wash to complete the job off!

With the holidays upon us, staying on top of our children’s oral health is a huge priority around here!

Here are some simple ways to combat the effects of sugar on your kid’s oral care this Holiday!

  • Save treats like candy, cookies and pies for after mealtime since this is when the amount of saliva produced in the mouth is greater and will therefore better help protect your child’s teeth.
  • Dairy acts as a buffer to the acids produced by oral bacteria, decreasing the possibility of tooth decay. So consider serving your children milk or cheese with holiday candies and treats.
  • Hard candy can get stuck between kids’ teeth, which can cause cavities. Flossing can help remove the candy particles. Try flossers adorned with your child’s favorite character to help make flossing fun.
  • To help pace the amount of candy your child is consuming around holidays store excess candy in a sealed container and establish set times when your child can have a treat.
  • Encourage children to drink more water to help prevent tooth decay. If you choose bottled water, check the label for fluoride content. According to the American Dental Association, fluoridated water can reduce the number of cavities children get in their baby teeth.

We had a fun time of games, crafts, eating, learning and movie watching!

This little guy likes to watch movies a bit close,

now that we have covered teeth health we may need to discuss the eyes!

We made a fun ornament craft to show off our bright, clean teeth / smiles…

At the end of the day everyone was able to try their new products.

Our Oral-B Stages III & Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health FOR ME party was a huge success and

just in time with all of the sweet treats that come with this time of year!!

Girls’ Night In

Last night I attended our homeschool groups annual “Moms Night In” – Mother / Daughter Christmas Tea! We always have the best time together, we end up with a plethora of finger foods and the yummiest of desserts! Imagine a bunch of homeschool moms slaving away in the kitchen baking all day… the possibilities really are limitless!

I think each of us looks forward to the time of fellowship and conversation sans children. It gives us all a chance to visit and relax in way that is not possible when you have little ones underfoot.

After filling up on lots of dangerous goodies, we gather together for a group picture. After pictures, that have us all in stitches, (we all get the giggles during picture time) we sit around the fireplace in the living room for a  “White Elephant” ornament exchange! We can go in circles with this game all the while laughing and cheering each other on as we “steal” each others ornaments. A white elephant gift exchange is a popular holiday party game. Generally, white elephant parties need a minimum of six participants. With a larger group, game play may be more protracted. White elephant parties have been known to result in playful rivalries between players trying to get sought after gifts, in our case ornament! The goal of a white elephant party is usually to entertain rather than to gain. We love this game and have a blast with it every year.

 

The next big get-together we will for Christmas! Where did the time go? I will have these precious ornament cupcakes set out for our guests on Christmas Eve…

Ingredients
  • 8 Duncan Hines Red Velvet cupcakes baked in red paper liners
  • 8 Duncan Hines Red Velvet cupcakes baked in green paper liners
  • 8 Duncan Hines Red Velvet cupcakes baked in white paper liners
  • 2 cans (16 ounces each) Duncan Hines Creamy Home-Style Classic Vanilla Frosting
  • 1/2 cup each green, light green, red, yellow and white decorating sugars
  • 24 yellow spice drops
  • Black licorice laces, cut into 1 1/4 inch pieces
  • 24 thin pretzel sticks
  • 1 cup mini candy coated chocolates (e.g. Mini M&M’s)
  • Red hots or candy decors
  • Red licorice laces (e.g. Strawberry Peel n’ Pull)
  • Assortment of colored fruit chews and fruit leather (e.g. Laffy Taffy, Air Heads, Starburst, Fruit by the Foot)

Baking Instructions

  1. Spoon 1/2 cup of the vanilla frosting into a ziplock bag; set aside.
  2. Place the colored sugars into separate small bowls. Spread the tops of cupcakes with the vanilla frosting to mound slightly. Roll the tops of the cupcakes into one of the different colored sugars and coat completely.
  3. Cut the black licorice laces into twenty four 1 1/2″ pieces. Poke a hole on either end of the spice drops with a toothpick. Bend the licorice laces in half and insert the ends into the flat side of the spice drop to make a loop. Insert an end of the pretzel stick in the rounded end of the spice drop. Press the spice drop assembly, inserting the pretzel stick all the way into the sugared cupcakes to make the top of the ornament.
  4. Flatten the fruit chews on a piece of wax paper with a rolling pin to a 1/8 thickness. Use clean craft scissors or regular scissors and cut the fruit chews and leather into decorative pieces. Arrange candy pieces on top of the cupcakes to make stripes and lines. Snip a small corner from the bag with the vanilla frosting and pipe dots randomly over the cupcakes and on top of the fruit chews. Press the candy coated chocolates into the frosting to secure.
  5. Place cupcakes in another paper liner and place into small boxes or serving platter.

One Nation Under God: A Book for Little Patriots

A couple of weeks ago we received the most adorable, educational book for children, “One Nation Under God: A Book for Little Patriots “ written by Amelia Hamilton. The book is a precious counting book,  from one nation under God through ten amendments in the bill of rights! This is the perfect book to teach little patriots about the basics of America. My boys are 4, 6, 8 and 10 and each of them learned something new {I learned a few new things too}. The illustrations are bright yet classic, reminding me of the wonderful picture books I read a as child.

 

 

When you know you’re safe in your own home.
When you don’t have to pray alone.
When you say just what you feel.
It might not seem like a big deal.
Just remember that these rights weren’t free.
Many fought for you and me.

 

One Nation Under God: A Book for Little Patriots  will take your children on an adventure through the building blocks of America. As a homeschool mother, I loved that this book was not only engaging with fun images but a wonderful lesson on American history and government. This book was a blessing and a breath of fresh air to read with my boys… Thank you Amelia Hamilton for writing a one of kind book that shares the foundation of our great Nation with our children! My little patriots really enjoyed it and so did I!

Displaying Christmas Cards

The start of the holiday season always begins with a bit of holiday cheer filling up our mail box. We look forward to our daily delivery of Christmas cards from family and friends both near and far. I enjoy displaying our cards in a number of ways, we usually outline the door frames and arches closest to the entrance of of our home with greeting cards. We use Mavalus Tape to secure the cards to crown molding, wood shelves, painted walls and even stucco.  Mavalus Tape holds materials up for years and then peals right off without causing any damage. The stuff is amazing!

Another creative way to display your Christmas cards is by creating a Holiday garland, just hang your cards over your favorite  ribbon or clip them on.

After the holiday season we usually put all of the cards we receive into a small card holder in the kitchen. Each night, we pick out a card and we add the family to our evening meal time prayer.

As usual, I am late picking out our cards, so I have been tinkering around Tiny Prints looking for the perfect one.  I have narrowed it down to the following cards…

Why is food such a crutch for so many women? There are many online math programs to choose from, and we have tried a few, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well put together this program is. The interactive multimedia lessons are  highly animated and combine all three learning modalities – Audio, Visuals and Text-based instructions. This interactive curriculum definitely  grabbed the attention of my son.

Dominick (my 3rd grader)  enjoyed being able to get through many of the lessons on his own by listening and reading the step by step instructions. The interactive Flash Cards were fun to use, they allowed him to drill and practice while receiving real-time feedback and step-by-step instructions.

It is important our children to have the ability to adapt to the ever changing high tech world.  What better way to allow our children to use  technology then for learning and problem solving!

Brainetics – Math & Memory System Review

We have been given the opportunity to try out Brainteitcs as a family, it has been a fun time for us to spend together…learning!! Brainetics is a fun supplement to improve math and memory skills. It teaches helpful math shortcuts that allow you to do complex math problems in your head. Hubby and I really enjoyed how the lessons make you think, concentrate and pay attention in order to grasp each concept.

 

It was difficult for our 8 year old to keep up but our 10 yr old loved every step and could not wait to share some of his new “Math Tricks” with his friends.
