The greatest gift we can give to our children is to instill a heart of giving, service and empathy. All children are born with an innate sense of charity and compassion, it’s our job as parents to nurture it.
According to the experts, our brains are hardwired for empathy. When we show empathy towards a child we are expressing both the compassion and unconditional love which form the very bedrock of a nurturing childhood. Empathy nurtures children and our own relationships in a way that nothing else can.
Giving and serving provides children a boost in self-esteem as they realize they can make a difference in someone’s life.
Our family has found a very simple way to give back to our community in a great way! We are a homeschool family and we do not belong to a recognized 501(c)(3) tax exempt homeschool association so we can’t collect Box Tops for Education for ourselves. However, my husband is a public school music teacher so we have decided to save box tops for his school instead of throwing away cash. Box Tops can be used for anything the school needs, including field trips, music programs, supplies, school parties and more.
If your family is looking for a way to pay it forward and give back, this is a simple and fun way to do so while teaching your children some great lessons. Take it to another level of fun, make it a homeschool group project and have a little healthy competition among homeschool families or neighbors to see who can clip the most cash for kids in your community.
If your kids are in school, make this a friendly neighborhood competition, or a competition with other families from your child’s school. The possibilities are endless!
Possible Box Tops recipients
Your child’s school, a school in your nighborhood, a low-income school, family and friends with kids in school.

Why is it important to give to others?
How will we decide where to donate our box tops?
Talk about why you want to support children in your community.
Create goals and milestones to get your kids excited about collecting and clipping cash for kids. When you reach your Box Tops for Education goal, donate your box tops and celebrate with a special treat… like an ice cream party! Teaching great life lessons while giving back… it doesn’t get better than that.
