This month South Africa is celebrating the 94th birthday of its most prized national figure, anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, affectionately known as Madiba, his Xhosa clan name, is a South African politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
I have collected some resources and links to help us with a Nelson Mandela Lapbook we will be making to celebrate Mandela’s birthday on July 18th, also known as Mandela Day.
Nelson Mandela lead the fight against apartheid with extraordinary vigour and resilience after spending almost 30 years of his life behind bars. Without question, Mandela remains South Africa’s most respected and beloved hero as well as one of the greatest leaders of our time. He championed education for all, stating that he wanted to make “every home, every shack or rickety structure a center of learning“. Nelson Mandela’s contributions to social equality continue today.
Nelson Mandela Timeline for your Lapbook or Unit Study
- July 18th 1918, Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela is born in a small village in the Transkei province in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. His family had royal connections; his great-grandfather was a Thembu king and Mandela’s father is a respected counselor to the Thembu royal family. His father has four wives and Mandela is one of thirteen children. The family lived in a traditional thatched hut and raises livestock. On his first day of school, Rolihlahla is given the English name Nelson by an African teacher.
- 1952 – Mandela and Oliver Tambo open a law office in downtown Johannesburg and take on a heavy load of cases involving blacks persecuted under the new apartheid laws.
- Nelson Mandela’s fight against South Africa’s apartheid began in his early 30s.
- 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
- Mandela served 27 years in prison.
- Mandela was elected South Africa’s first black president four years after his release from prison.
- Mandela was the first South African President to be elected in a fully representative democratic election at the age of 74.
- As President, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation, while introducing policies aimed at combating poverty and inequality in South Africa.
- The fight against racial oppression in South Africa won Mandela the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993
- Mandela has received more than 250 awards over four decades.
